Wireless DSL Modem Gateway - Connection View

This section provides a quick description of a home wireless network connecting to the Internet with a DSL modem - '2Wire 2701HG-G' over the telephone line.

One friend of mine asked me to help him setting up the Internet connection at his home. Here are my notes on connecting his home computers to the Internet with a DSL modem.

Equipments provided by the telephone company:

  • "2Wire Gateway - 2701HG-G", used as a DSL modem and a wireless router. See note below.
  • 3 phone line filters, used to connect phones to the phone line.
  • 1 network cable, used to connect any computer to the modem

"2Wire Gatewary - 2701HG-G" is a very interesting device. It performs many functions:

  • A network hub with 4 ports to form a home network with cables.
  • A wireless router to add more computers to the home network with wireless devices.
  • A DSL Modem to form a PPP network with the telephone company using DSL technology over the phone line
  • A gateway to connect the home network to the PPP network.
  • A special computer running a Web server to perm configuration tasks.

If there are 5 computers at home: 3 of them have network cards and 2 of them have wireless connections, I drew this connection picture to my friend to show him how computers should be connected to the modem, and how the modem should be connected to the phone line:
