macOS Mail Auto Configuration

This section provides a tutorial example on how to configure macOS Mail to automatically detect and select POP and SMTP services from the mail server.

What Is macOS Mail? macOS Mail is the built-in email client tool on your macOS computer.

Configuring macOS Mail to work with Postfix and Dovecot servers is pretty easy, if you are providing services with their default port numbers.

For example, my email server supports the standard services on default ports:

So here is what I did to configure macOS Mail with above server settings.

1. Launch Mail app from the launchpad.

2. Click "Mail > Add Account" menu. You see a list of popular email service providers.

3. Select "Other Mail Account" and click "Continue". You see a small dialog box.

4. Enter your name, email address and password. And click "Sign In". It will try and display an error: "Unable to verify account name or password". More settings are displayed at the same time.

5. Enter the following extra settings:

           User Name: herong
        Account Type: POP
Incoming Mail Server: 192.168.1.100
Outgoing Mail Server: 192.168.1.100

6. Click "Sign In" again. It will try and display a certificate exception: "Mail can't verify the identity of the server 192.168.1.100".

7. Click "Continue" accept the exception.

You should be able to send new emails and retrieve emails now.
