Archived: Viewing Certificate Path Validation Error in IE 8

This section provides a tutorial example on how to find the cause of the certificate validation error in IE 8.

If you see a red "Certificate Error" icon next to the Website address, you should click it find out what is cause of the error. Here is what I did to continue with my login.yahoo.com test presented in the previous tutorial.

1. Click the red "Certificate Error" icon next to the Website address. The "Untrusted Certificate" pop up box shows up.

2. Click the "View Certificate" link near the button of the pop up box. The "Certificate" dialog box shows up. The "General" tab shows a message saying: "This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority."

3. Click the "Certificate Path" tab. You will see:

DigiCert High Assurance EV Root CA - An intermediate CA certificate
 |- DigiCert High Assurance CA-3 - An intermediate CA certificate
     |- login.yahoo.com - The Web server certificate

4. Double click "DigiCert High Assurance EV Root CA". You will see:

Issued to: DigiCert High Assurance EV Root CA
Issued by: GTE CyberTrust Global Root

The IE 8 failed to validate "login.yahoo.com", because it could not find the trusted root certificate "GTE CyberTrust Global Root".
