PKI Tutorials - Herong's Tutorial Examples - v2.32, by Herong Yang
Archived: IE 8 Displaying Certificate Error Icon
This section provides a tutorial example showing that IE 8 displays a Certificate Error icon next to the Website address if you continue to use a Website that failed with during the certificate validation process.
What should you do when IE 8 tells you that "There is a problem with this website's security certificate"? My suggestions is:
Here is what I did when I see the certificate error page on https://login.yahoo.com:
1. Open IE 8 to visit to https://login.yahoo.com again and wait for the certificate error page.
2. Click the link "Continue to this website (not recommended)". IE 8 displays the login page with a warning color in the address area and a "Certificate Error" icon next to the address:
At this point, you should stop using login page and click the "Certificate Error" icon to investigate the error as shown in the next tutorial.
But if you trust yahoo.com, you can still continue to use site. IE 8 failed to authenticate the identity of login.yahoo.com, but it will continue to use the certificate to encrypt data sent and received from the server.
