The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Protocol

This chapter provides tutorial notes and example codes on the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol. Topics include introduction of the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol; JSSE (Java Secure Socket Extension) package; test program to create default SSL sockets; testing the javas.net.ssl.SSLContext class.

What Is SSL (Secure Socket Layer)?

SSL Specification Overview

JSSE - Java Implementation of SSL and TLS

SslSocketTest.java - Default SSL Socket Factory Test

SslContextTest.java - javax.net.ssl.SSLContext Class Test

Conclusions:

  • The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol offers a security protection to other Internet protocols like HTTP.
  • With SSL, the client creates a secret key to be used to encrypt data transmitted between them.
  • Of course, the client must encrypt the secret key by the server's public key before sending it to the server.

Sample programs listed in this chapter have been tested with JDK 1.5.0.
