Message Security Properties in Outlook 2007

This section describes how to view message security properties on received emails with digital signatures in MS Office Outlook 2007. Message security properties include both encryption layer and digital signature layers.

As shown in the previous tutorial, I was not able to send out a test message with both digital signature and encryption because I don't have a valid personal certificate. But I was able to receive an email message with a digital signature in Outlook 2007.

1. Run Outlook 2007 and open the email message that has a digital signature. I see an extra line in the message header section, "Signed by: bob@internet.com", with a digital signature icon at the end.

2. Click the digital signature icon. The digital signature status dialog box shows up:

Digital Signature: Valid

The digital signature on this message is Valid and Trusted.

For more information about the certificate used to digitally sign the
message, click Details.

[ ] Warn me about errors in digital signed e-mail before message opens

3. Click "Details" button. The Message Security Properties dialog box shows up.

Messages may contain encryption and digital signature layers. Each
digital signature layer may contain multiple signatures.

Security Layers:
  |- Subject: This is a test...
       |- Digital Signature Layer
            |- Signer: bob@internet.com
