System Software - The Original Mac OS Operating System
This section provides a quick introduction of the original Macintosh, the first commercial personal computer with GUI (Graphical User Interface) developed by Apple Inc. in 1984.
System Software was the original name of the Mac OS operating system for original Macintosh computers produced in 1984 by Apple Inc..
System Software (Mac OS) was the first commercial operating system to allow users interacting with the computer entirely through a GUI (Graphical User Interface) instead of a command line interface. Other main features of the original System Software are:
- The Desktop - A graphical representation of the operating system with a menu of system commands located on the top of the screen. Graphical icons representing different system resources are located on different places on the screen.
- The Finder - An application that manages files on disks. Directories and files are displayed as icons.
- Drag-and-Drop (DnD) - A mouse action used to manipulate files. For example, a user can press the mouse button on a file icon, hold the mouse button down, drag the file icon to the trash can icon, and release the mouse button to drop the file icon on the trash can to delete the file.
