∟"binding" - Binding Definition Element

This section describes 'binding', a definition element that defines a binding for operations defined in a port type to a communication protocol and a message transmission format.

"binding" is a top level element of a WSDL 1.1 document. "binding" is used to define a binding with one or multiple given operations being bound to communication protocol with extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extensions. The syntax of "binding" looks like this:

    ... extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extension ...
    <wsdl:operation name="nmtoken2">
      ... extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extension ...
      <wsdl:input name="nmtoken3">
         ... extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extension ...
      </wsdl:input>
      <wsdl:output name="nmtoken4">
         ... extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extension ...
      </wsdl:output>
      <wsdl:fault name="nmtoken5">
         ... extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extension ...
      </wsdl:fault>
    </wsdl:operation>
  </wsdl:binding>

Notes on the "binding" element:

name="nmtoken1" - Provides a reference name to this binding.
type="qname" - Specifies a port type by referring to a "portType" element.
name="nmtoken2" - Specifies an operation to be bound by referring a "operation" element in the specified port type.
name="nmtoken3" - Specifies an input to be bound by referring to an "input" element in the specified operation.
name="nmtoken4" - Specifies an output to be bound by referring to an "output" element in the specified operation.
name="nmtoken5" - Specifies a fault to be bound by referring to a "fault" element in the specified operation.
Extensibility elements from WSDL 1.1 extensions are used to provide additional binding information at different levels.

Here is an example of "binding" element:

In this example,

Binding, helloBinding, is defined to bind operation, Hello, in port type, helloPortType.
This binding uses the WSDL SOAP extension to specify SOAP over HTTP as the communication protocol.
The value for the SOAPAction header line is specified at the operation level.
SOAP body serialization rule is specified at the input/output level by use="literal".
No binding provided for any fault message, because my operation has no "fault" defined.
