Listed as one of ten best ancient Chinese music pieces, "Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute" was a piece of lyre music, attributed to Cai Wenji (蔡文姬), who was taken as prisoner to the northerlands by Xiongnu nomads for 12 years. Cai Wenji returned to her homeland in 207.

《胡笳十八拍》,为中国十大古曲之一。汉末,著名文学家、古琴家蔡邕的女儿蔡 琰(文姬), 在兵乱中被匈奴所获,留居南匈奴与左贤王为妃,生了两个孩子。后 来曹操派人把她接回,她写了一首长诗,叙唱她悲苦的身世和思乡别子的情怀。全 诗共十八段,谱作成套歌曲十八首,名为《胡笳十八拍》或《胡笳鸣》。
